Indie Book Spotlight #2- "Last of the Old School" by Fuzz One

One of the coolest packages I got in the mail in the last year was a bunch of stuff from legendary seminal graffiti artist FUZZ ONE.  If you are not hip to early NYC graffiti, just know that this dude was a major player from back in the early 70s, and crushed the Bronx back in the days.  His real name is Vincent Fedorchak, and he also happens to be a real nice dude.  He has two books out, and I suggest that you cop them both if you are as interested as I am in all things dark, grimey, and rugged 70s NYC culture.

His first book was simply titled "Fuzz One: A Bronx Childhood", and came out somewhere around 2005 or so.  It was put out by a small publishing company, Testify Books.  It is loaded with insane stories of a little white dude running around Subway tunnels and rough hoods just crushing shit, and primarily focuses on tales of the train yards and graffiti domination.  As Amazon puts it:

"Description: FUZZ ONE is the staggering, outrageous, true story of a raucous and wholly unsupervised childhood in the Bronx of the 1970s. Through Vincent Fedorchak's hilarious deadpan narration of a wild existence wrought with adolescent braggadocio, we are taken on a rough journey through a deteriorating Bronx jungle-wonderland where property value was plummeting and kids ruled the streets. Whether executing a bizarre graffiti mission in another borough with all the insanity of a special ops soldier, fearlessly tracking down Satan-worshippers camped out in the old castles in Van Cortlandt Park, or being the first white boy inducted into the infamous Ebony Dukes street gang, Fedorchak never flinches. Filled with hundreds of never-before-published photos of graffiti art and Bronx cityscapes, as well as first-hand accounts of the exploits of legendary graffiti artists such as DONDI, BLADE, COMET, NOC 167, BOOTS 119, and others, FUZZ ONE is a guided tour of a heretofore uncharted Bronx underworld. This epic tale of youth gone awry fully captures an important era of cultural upheaval in New York City's history. It is set apart from other memoirs via the inclusion of more than 300 images, nearly all in color, that give the volume strong historical, anthropological, and cultural appeal. "

All I can say is I read that joint about five or six times.  It is super entertaining.

Suffice to say that I was ultra hyped when I heard Fuzz put out a second book in 2007 on his own dime to help pay for some of his ailing mother's medical expenses.  He called the sequel "Last of the Old School" and it is SO RAW.  I had to hit him up directly to order a copy up when I heard that it didn't even have pictures and was full of nothing but the most hardcore NYC gritty street tales from the 70s.

Vincent/Fuzz is a super nice guy, and offered to send me some original artwork along with the book.  I have to say, he loaded it up for me with pages of colorful art, throwups, an "Anthony" piece for me, autographs, mix CDs, stickers, etc.  Peep some samples:

Ultra big ups to the one and only Fuzz One.  Buy this book directly from the man. It is loaded with tales the likes of which you would not believe.  Fuzz takes on Satanic cults, saves kids from kidnapping predators, and gets into all manner of adventures and debauchery as a little dude in the Bronx.  Very fun to read, and will give you a picture of a time and a place you would never comprehend unless you grew up then and there.
It seems the only way to get this unpolished gem is to hit the man up himself.  Please do.

Vinyl finds minneapolis and st paul 7.3.11

Found some decent funk and soul at cheapo and electric fetus this past weekend while digging with my homie, Del6. Some disco twelve inches too not pictured here, but some avi heat. Hyped about the joe tex and harold wheeler. James brown is a double.  Solid little bits to fill in some gaps.  Also, I never owned the Fantastic Four LP (top right), but always enjoyed the "Got to Have Your Love" 12" promo, which, though the title track, is not actually on this album

Dance Classic Edit- The Hollies'"Draggin' My Heels" (Social Disco Club Extended Edit)
Mindless Boogie 014 (October, 2008)

Yo!  Back from a hiatus (there is a psycho in our neighborhood and he is really throwing off our good summer vibes), I am here to return the mojo to Lowertown with an all time loft/dance classic from The Hollies!  This is an extended and mixable edit of their breezy summer jam "Draggin' my Heels" tastefully done up by edit masters, Social Disco Club!  No funny business, just nice extensions holding true to the original in all ways.

This download includes the full vinyl release of Mindless Boogie's edit 12" number 14, the flip side of which is an extended edit of The Lovin' Spoonful's "Summer in the City" by the dude Peter Visti.  All of these edits are from 2008 and probably out of print (and probably on a million other Blogspots that are way more popular than mine, but who cares)!

Enjoy and crank it up- hopefully on a smart dancefloor!

BEAUTIFUL MUSIC DISCOVERIES 5/27/11: RAINY DAY SPECIAL

Transmitting live from a rainy and cold spring afternoon here in Lowertown, St. Paul.  I just discovered two new musical gems I would like to share, especially because they sound just like how this day look and feels here.  From progressive seventies country to Peruvian psych rock boys doin' their version of lovers' rock, I present today's beautiful music discoveries.

I found both of these jams after googling into some unknown music I was hearing on a Parisian house record label dude's mix of all places.

The mix is by the dude who runs "My Love is Underground", which is a deep 90s style house record label in Paris.  Here is the mix ("Beauty Pt. 2") with my selected tracks buried within:

Underground Paris - Beauty Pt.2 by Underground Paris

The songs I like most are as follows:

1.) Rusty Wier- "Silly Rhymes"

Rusty was a dude who lived and played in Austin, Texas throughout his career.  He died in 2009.  He's kind of an under the radar dude, so learning about this via a Parisian house dude's mix was kind of convoluted.  Please enjoy this BEAUTIFUL gem.

2.) TELEGRAPH AVENUE-"Happy"

These Peruvian hippy boys knock it out the park on this one!  If I am happy, well...nobody is able to tell me I am wrong!  Love this jam.  Again, please mellow out and enjoy wherever you may be.

ARTHUR VEROCAI (S/T-1972) BRAZILLIAN MEGA RARITY- $5,100 DOLLAR GEM OR TEPID TURD? DL HERE

ARTHUR VEROCAI (S/T-1972) BRAZALLIAN MEGA RARITY- $5,100 DOLLAR GEM OR TEPID TURD?  DL LINK BELOW.

Well, two weeks ago a copy of this Brazillian LP sold for a whopping $5,100.  (see: popsike auction history)Does this warm concoction of jazz, funk, folksy soul, and unique grooves from this under-the-radar guitarist, producer, and arranger truly live up to the hype or is it just an exotic dud?  Download the full album with cover art via the link below and you be the judge!

Arthur Verocai put out this, his lone solo album, on Continental Records in 1972 and it quickly slipped into obscurity before becoming a bit of a legendary piece amongst record collectors.  Myths abound: most of the original copies were burned in a fire, so-and-so discovered this gem and then so-and-so took it to England and blew the price up; some people say it sucks, some say it is the greatest...I think it is groovy and pretty damn enjoyable, but I think only a rich motherfucker or only the most insane collecter could justify paying many grands for this LP.

It's a cool piece though, and presents many tantalizing moods for the discerning listener.  Verocai did a lot of arrangements for other musicians, and worked behind the scenes on a lot of classic Brazillian music, but this is his personal masterpiece.  It is a wholly unique artifact, especially for 1972.  I don't speak Portugese, but I guess he is tangling with some heavy themes via figurative language.  I just took Luv-n-Haight records (the label that reissued it a few years back) word for this though.  I like the sounds- they work just as well for frolicking on a fine summer's day as they do swhile staring out a steamy window on a rainy and grey day here ensconsed and alienated in the red bricks of Lowertown, St. Paul.

Please to download and enjoy!

SORRY YOU DIDN'T WIN

I'm really trying to acquire a shit-ton of Latin records these days.  Oh well- I shouldn't have picked a super hyped Ebay auction (Caverndiscos selling Matt Africa's collection) to start my push.  Sorry, I didn't win.

Express Rising- Self Tiled (Memphix Records, 2003). DOWNLOAD HERE

Express Rising- Self Tiled (Memphix Records, 2003).  DOWNLOAD LINK BELOW

Wooow, this album is an instrumental masterpiece and it came out in 2003 on some strictly limited edition vinyl business.  Memphix is the brainchild of infamous vinyl collector and producer, Dante Carfagna.  This mysterious LP contains beautiful and lush soundscapes built from earthy samples mingling with crunchy hip hop breakbeats.

I think this stands out as one of the better albums in the instrumental hip hop genre and it still holds up to this day.  Lush, woodsy, and lo-fi vibes that sound exactly like how the album cover (above) looks!  I love this sort of anonymous and limited musical presentation.  Beautiful layers of samples that create a meloncholy vibe and no superfluous producer trickery.  Excellent!  Also, good luck finding an original copy in the field, but if you do, scoop it up with the quickness!  It goes for a bit of cash, but don't sell it- throw it on the platter on a sweaty rainy June afternoon, sip a Merlot, and zone out to this.  You will love this, especially if you are a woodsy Minnesota  motherfucker like moi (or just feel that in your heart).

In the meantime, please to download the full album below:

Vinyl Finds: Friday 5.6.11 & Sunday 5.8.11- St. Paul and Minneapolis

Before Blogger deleted all my old posts, I wrote quite a bit about this pile of records I found.  I just can't do it again.  Siiiiiiiigh.

I will say, the NY Sleeze 12" is rare boogie funk which includes a cool version of the BT Express Classic "Do it Til You're Satisfied" and sells for about a bill.

The Scientist of Soul 45 on Kashe is some cool Northern Soul business with a ballad on the flip.

Afro Latin Soul Tet is one of my favorite records and I was hyped to find a second copy at Electric Fetus in Minneapolis for 3 bucks.  Excellent Latin soul groovers.

The Chakachas album is some weird "Especial" pressing.  Good straight ahead latin soul and salsa record which includes the all time classic sex jam "Jungle Fever"

The Black Jazz label albums will be added to the mini-discography I have going here.  Spring Rain is enjoyable stuff, Adam's Apple is my second copy.  Hyped to find both for just a few bucks at Hymie's in Minneapolis.

The Friends and Co. label 45 contains some cool Greg Carmichael lead discofunk dance business.

Finally, that "African Boog-a-Loo" 45 is great dancin' soul stuff that I found at the Co-op in South minneapolis for a few bucks.  The flip is tasty too!

I also found a bunch of 80s and italo 12"s and common 45s that I won't bore you with.  Let's just say I still don't know how I feel about the group "Doctor's Cat".  All in all, a good weekend for some local diggin'!

Back with more next time.

Indie Book Spotlight: "Booke of Logos" by Daniel Thomas Wieken (Uncivilized Bookes, 2011, Minneapolis)

Indie Book Spotlight: "Booke of Logos" by Daniel Thomas Wieken (Uncivilized Bookes, 2011, Minneapolis)

I live near a gentleman named Dan Wieken based out of Lowertown, St. Paul, MN, and he published an amazing tiny book(e) of hand drawn logos that he designed on spec for some of the world's elite!  Personally, I think he is a goddamned genius and these folks should jump right on the bandwagon and use these tasteful and market-ready designs for whatever campaign they are planning next!

Please contact this artist/publisher at : http://www.danwieken.com/ for more art and information.

The publisher can be reached at http://www.uncivilizedbooks.com/

I'm so into this stuff, I feel like a straight up fanboy when I see this guy walking around the neighborhood.

Enjoy a few samples (all images copyright the author, Daniel Wieken, 2011, of course)

A design for Oprah!

Bono (this one rules so hard)

Jersey Shore for their season 666 campaign!

Rad stuff, Dan!

Vinyl Find 5.8.11: Harry Ray-"Ride Your Pony Girl"- All Platinum Records Promo 45 (New Jersey 1974) DOWNLOAD MP3

Vinyl FInd 5.8.11: Harry Ray-"Ride Your Pony Girl"- All Platinum Records Promo 45 (New Jersey 1974)

I was super hyped to pull this promo 45 on a Sunday at Hymie's Records in Minneapolis.  I guess this is pretty rare.  Popsike shows a few copies selling for around $160.00 US recently.  Nonetheless, this record smokes and is super sticky soul off the All Platinum record label which features sleazy sounds such as Sylvia's sex jamms amongst other delights.

Harry Ray was a good dude.  He played with fabulous acts such as Ray, Goodman & Brown and The Moments.  He lived in died in New Jersey (what up to my girlfriend) and maintained that vibe to the fullest.  This record features a sexy groove, a nice little intro break, and soulful sounds equally effective for your balmy BBQ or bedroom meetings.

Please download this vinyl rip from my personal copy at 320 KBPS MP3!
